Relief Knowledge
Carving
Carving, in sculpture, refers to cutting or carving wood, stone, or other materials into the desired shape.
Relief carving
Relief carving is a type of carving in which an artist carves the image they want to shape onto a flat surface, causing it to detach from the original material's plane. The materials for relief carving include stone, wood, ivory, and metal, which are generally divided into three types: shallow relief, high relief, and intaglio carving.
Bas Relief
The carved patterns and patterns protrude shallowly from the bottom, among which the ground Yang Wen and Liu Qing should belong to this category. This technique was popular in the late Qing Dynasty and was particularly common in areas such as engraving.
High Relief
The method of carving patterns with high protrusions on the bottom surface is commonly used in pen barrels, incense burners, and Shoushan stone carvings. High relief can also be understood as a type of flat relief carving with a deeper lower blade, broadly speaking, it is also a deep relief or deep through carving.
Intaglio
Refers to the carving of patterns or inscriptions on images or lines that are engraved or below the surface.
